Appealing to the Under 5 Crowd

I’m going to take off my photographers cap for a minute and chat with you as a Mama. My kids are 6½ and 3½ and since my oldest welcomed his baby sister into the house, I’ve always been asked how I capture their relationship. My kids were both born with camera’s in their faces, literally, so with that in mind, they are used to getting their photos taken. But there are moments (more times than not) that they would prefer I buzz right off. So with that, I’ll give you my tips that I use with my own kids, and take with me into my sessions to get them ready and excited to take photos.

Firstly let’s chat about before the photographer shows up.

It is always a great idea to start talking about the photo session a couple days in advance! Kids understand so much, and if you tell them someone is coming to take some pictures of them, it can ease their nervousness when the session begins. Let’s face it, we are all a little camera shy, so it makes sense that having someone take their photos may seem a little strange.

I like to give my kids an idea of how long I’ll be taking their photos, and sometimes I’ll introduce a visual timer. Most of the time they just want to know how long I’ll keep them from their toys.

And lastly, before the photographer shows up make sure they’ve had a good meal and drink. I don’t know about you, but I’m in no mood for anything on an empty stomach.

Ok! You’ve prepped them. Now what?

Alright. So the photographer is here and it’s your kiddos time to shine! Be ready, they may not want to shine, and that’s ok! Please know, all photographers are used to kids not being their BFFs and we do not take it personally. Here are some tips!

  1. I am NOT above bribery. If you follow me on socials you’ll know that I have a stash of lollipops at all times.

  2. I welcome kids to take a photo for me! Sometimes all it takes is them understanding what it is I’m doing. That big camera of mine looks a lot different than the phones they often see.

  3. Let them take a break! Just like I give my kids a time for taking photos, I give them 5 minute breaks if it’s going to be a lengthy session.

  4. And finally, don’t sweat it. Honestly, if it’s something I’ve told myself 1000 times, kids will be kids. A little back story, I started my photography very posed and in studios with backdrops. After my kids got a little more squirmy I realized my calling was lifestyle sessions. I love capturing photos of life as it is.

And so! I leave you with this.

Life is messy, and never goes to plan, but damn it makes a great photo.
